Teaching M15: Irish Music Accompaniment and FS08: Sampler: Irish Songs from the Great Lakes and North Woods (Friday only)
Brian Miller provides guitar and bouzouki accompaniment for several top performers in the North American Irish music scene. Esteemed Irish music critic Earle Hitchner writes: “The backing of Miller on guitar flexes not just muscle but a fully complementary style.” Brian plays guitar in the DADGAD tuning and the Greek bouzouki, an instrument that has been adopted into the Irish tradition in recent decades. In addition to Bua, he performs with Chulrua, The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, Norah Rendell, Brian Miller and Randy Gosa, and the Two Tap Trio. He has been featured on MPR’s All Things Considered, CBC Radio’s Canada Live, and Ireland’s RTE television, RTE radio and TG4 television.
Also a traditional singer and folklorist, Brian is the founder of the Traditional Singers Club of the Twin Cities. He has been a guest lecturer on aspects of the Irish song tradition at University College Cork (Ireland), the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Brian is a two-time recipient of the Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board for his study and revival of Irish-influenced music collected in the Great Lakes region.
Brian enjoys teaching and has taught flute, whistle, bouzouki and guitar at the St. Paul-based Center for Irish Music since 2006.
