C01: Uncovering Your Irish American Civil War AncestorsInstructor: Damian Shiels - Read full bio
Location: Online via Zoom
Start Date: Sat, August 08, 2020 Start Time: 10:00 AMEnd Date: Sat, August 08, 2020 End Time: 11:00 AMDescription: During the American Civil War some 200,000 Irish-born men served in uniform--180,ooo of them fighting for the United States. All told, in the vicinity of 250,000 men who had either been born in Ireland or were born abroad to Irish parents donned Union blue during the conflict. This programme will provide an overview of their service and background, explaining when, why and where they joined up. It will then take a detailed look at the vast array of online material available for those who wish to explore the story of their own Civil War ancestors, with a particular focus on the Midwest Irish. This will include an overview of both free resources and collections available via genealogical sites such as Ancestry and Fold3. Additionally, it will outline some of the major offline repositories of information on these men, and how they can be accessed. Finally, it will offer strategies on how you can maximise the detail you can reconstruct of your ancestor's military experiences, drawing on examples from www.irishamericancivilwar.com.
