Teaching C01: Uncovering Your Irish American Civil War Ancestors
Damian Shiels is a conflict archaeologist and social historian who specialises in the Irish in the American Civil War. Currently a researcher at Northumbria University, he has previously held posts as a curator working with the military collections of the National Museum of Ireland, and as a director of one of Ireland's leading heritage businesses. He has published and lectured widely in Ireland, Europe and the United States on topics related to Irish archaeology and Irish history, and is a regular expert contributor to broadcast media. He established and curates www.irishamericancivilwar.com, the largest repository of information relating to the Irish experience of the American Civil War on the web, which was recently selected for permanent archiving by the National Library of Ireland. Among his books are "The Irish in the American Civil War" (History Press, 2014) and "The Forgotten Irish: Irish Emigrant Experiences in America" (History Press, 2017).
