As the name suggests the top and bottom E strings are dropped down to a D while the middle four strings remain in standard tuning. By dropping both E strings down to a D this immediately gives the guitar a wider dynamic and a beautiful full drone sound when playing a simple D chord.This tuning can be used very effectively for accompanying Irish melodies in all keys, both with and without a capo. Jim will show you how he uses this tuning to create an amazing sound accompanying Irish music and the many other advantages it offers.
Jim will look at rhythms, chord shapes, an exploration of double drop D tuning, developing fingerstyle techniques, harnessing the power of altered tuning and arranging well known tunes/songs. Participants should be familiar with guitar tablature and basic guitar forms.
Jim Murray has been touring the world full time as a professional musician since the age of eighteen. Jim is considered Sharon Shannon’s “right hand man” having recorded and toured with her over five continents. He also released two critically acclaimed albums with long term partner Seamus Begley in 2001 and 2008 which collectively scooped many prestigious awards such as The Irish Times and Hotpress Traditional Irish Music Album of the Year. Since Jim’s arrival on the world stage, he has gained the respect of both national and international musicians and has performed and recorded with artists such as Sinead O’Connor, Steve Earl, Shane McGowan, Altan and Mary Black to mention but a few.
